Goals | How Should Be Set | Facts And Action Plan
Have you ever asked yourself how the society has evolved so much? Why some people have too much being able to get many things in their lives while many others are suffering to get even the minimum?
There are many reasons behind it in which I will keep talking on this website. However, one of the most important facts is why some people have too much while others are struggling? One crucial thing behind this success and ignorance is the idea and knowledge of set GOALS.
Why Are Goals Important?
When we talk about success, one thing many people don’t know is the concept of setting goals. Most people don’t even know they need to set objectives to become successful in their lives.
Ok, it is not the rule, there are many people who became successful without even know the concept of goals, but, they knew they needed to focus on something. Therefore, I have never heard about people who just guess to become successful and simply became. They always make sure they are on the proper path to get what they want. So in some form internally they have to keep focused on an aim.
Goals if properly set can give you a good advantage on others in terms of accomplishments. If you understand it, you will see how good your life will change and how you will accomplish things fast in your life.
Real Story Of The Effectiveness Of Wells Set Goals
Imagine you study at some university with people who apparently are the same as you. After a decade you meet all of them and figure out that a small amount of the group became super successful, earning over 95% of the other classmates together
McCormack in his book What they don’t teach you at Harvard Business School described a real story about a research made at Harvard trying to figure out who of them had and doesn’t have goals for their future.
The question of the research was” Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” The answers were, only three percent of the students had written goals, thirteen had goals but not written, and the other eighty-four percent had no goals at all.
After ten years all the students who had been researched had interviewed again. The data exhibited that the thirteen percent of students who had goals but not written were earning twice times more than other eighty-four percent.
on the other hand, the three percent of students who had clear written goals were earning ten times more than all of them together.
Have you seen how important it is to have goals, and how about clear and written goals? It is important for you to get clear about your life and see what you want and pursue what you desire.
How Should You Set Goals?
Again I will mention here the idea of how it is important knowing how to set goals. In 1981 George Doran brings to the world a great idea of how to set objectives in which he called as SMART.
SMART goals are an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. These are important topics that should be considered. George Doran in his publication brought a totally new concept of how to set goals in 1981. The SMART concept became popular among managers and executives from that time until now.
However, although the SMART objectives were first created to give support for companies and managers to have a better, clear, and result based operations, they also can be used for normal people.
Here we will approach each element of SMART. I will describe for you how it should be considered when you prepare your own objectives.
In this first part, you have to first know “exactly” what you want. Here you should have no doubt, you should hit the nail right on the head in terms of assurance. For example, if you are thinking you are feeling overweight. For this topic, you should know how much pounds or kilos you want to lose. You can specify as “I’m going to lose 10 kilos”. That’s it, you should be specific and not going around trying to explain something to yourself. It is simply self-deception.
Here you have to know whether your goals can be measurable. It is an important topic because you should not get lost losing track during the process.
Imagine you are trying to lose ten kilos training every day. However, you are not tracking your progress. Be measurable is simply be prepared in advance, know how hard it will be, knowing how much should be done every day for example.
Question yourself, how much effort should be done? How many days or months will it be accomplished? The answer to these questions can bring you the measure of your goal.
As you already know, how measurable is your goal? Now you have to know how achievable and realistic it is. As we are using the example of losing only ten kilos, it is not hard to know the answer.
However, when we are setting a goal which is a real challenge, you have to make sure if you are able to attain it. If you are an entrepreneur and want to bring your company to another level in whatever area, you have to make sure whether it is within the reality.
For example, if an owner of a company is sinking in debt, it will not be too attainable and realistic to buy new machinery. It would be much better to pay its debts.
To answer this, you have to make questions such as How realistic is this goal for me right now? Is it possible to attain this objective in six months or one year? You have to be realistic.
The world says by itself. Why should you put so many efforts in something if it is not relevant? This is a crucial part of setting goals because wasting time on irrelevant objectives is not a good idea. When not looking to the relevance of the goal at the begin can make you lose interest through the time and finally make you give up.
If you have never used the SMART technique before but you are used to setting goals, you may have the “aha” moment the same as me when I saw this concept for the first time. Because, many times I had to stop the objective as a result of something more important, or lack of interest. Therefore, you have to ask yourself if this current goal in your mind is worth your effort in the long term.
you know what goal you want to reach, how many efforts you have to put to reach, how relevant the goal is for you right now, thus you should also know when you should reach it. The time frame of your goal should be specific, for example, “I want to lose ten kilos until the 30th of September, starting from tomorrow morning”, then you put the date. This is an example of a time-frame objective.
What Is Next?
Have a timely objective will give you the discipline to keep going because you have to meet a deadline. This put yourself on track and creates momentum. It is important because you will start respecting more yourself and your time.
In my case, I remember I had time-frame goals and that makes me pass through hard times with a smile on my face. I knew I would be out that situation in a matter of time.
Yes, this is how you create and set objectives. Now you know the concept of goals and targets, the history, and how to set them. Now, please for the love of God don’t waste your time, see what you want and use the SMART formula.
Moreover, use the Harvard survey history I mention here to make you inspired to take action. Now you understand what differs successful people for those who just who don’t have or like to procrastinate. Take your time and figure out what you really want and go to get it.
This is not the final concept to set goals, there are many things that should work together with these techniques. The 100 days challenge, for example, is one of them. You can increase your work ethic and create momentum in your life. Many people act and behave differently. Thus the concept of setting goals is one of the improvements they can bring to their lives.
So, these are just a few different things for you to improve yourself. It is time to act, take paper and a pencil and start a storm brain to find your purpose in life. Take action.
